iPhone headset / earbud mess

I struggled for a long time with the unbearable mess of the iPhone headset cord. It always snarled and contained several knots even after rolling it up properly and then putting it in my pocket. The rough rubber surface of the cord did encourage this mess.

So I thought for a while about using a yellow “Kinder Suprise” egg box and some holding mechanism to roll up the cord within the box.

But until now I didn’t come up with a proper holding mechanism. While zapping through a gadget-blog this evening and after having sorted a big box of Lego® these days I got it. Just use a lego bar with holes to make the holding mechanism.

So although it was past 2 AM I started tinkering with that. Using different sizes of the lego bars, putting slots at different sides and trying out different glues I found a really good working solution. Unfortunately it’s not yellow – the yellow ones did not move that smoothly.

The steps to create that are simple. First take a Kinder surprise egg, open it and eat the chocolate. The build whatever is inside the yellow box. Afterwards use a tool to make two holes (one big enough to fit the headset mike through it) in the larger piece of the box. Then take a dremel or whatever tool (saw) to cut a slice into the lego bar that is big enough for the cord. At last glue the opposite end of the bar to the middle of the smaller surprise box. If needed put some oil onto the rim.

Take your headset and run it into the holes so that both ends of same length hang outside the box.

Put the part with the lego bar into place and see that the slice grabs the cord.

Turn both parts of the box in opposite directions

After turning both parts of the box until all the cord is wound up you are finished. Unroll the cord by just pulling on both ends.

Lego Spiel Minotaurus

Diese sind insofern interessant, daß sie auf den Lego Prinzipien aufbauen – Kreativität, Umbau erwünscht. So wird das Spiel während des Verlaufs immer wieder umgebaut, selbst der Würfel wird ständig verändert.

Das ist möglich, da er selbst auf allen 6 Seiten 4 Lego-Noppen hat, auf die man grosse und kleine flache Teile aufstecken kann.

Besonders gut sind diese Spiele auch für Blinde geeignet, da alles tastbar ist, und die Spielmaterialien fest zusammengesteckt sind. Für die Männchen muss man nur noch unterscheidbare Kopfbedeckungen nutzen und schon ist es spielbar.

Leider kann der Würfel nicht separat erworben werden und auch bei Verlust gibt es keinen Ersatz. Ich habe auf eine Anfrage, diese seltsame Mail von Lego bekommen.

Auf Grund strenger Vorgaben unserer Lizenzpartner dürfen wir keine lizenzierten LEGO Elemente verkaufen. Dazu gehören unter anderem LEGO Star Wars Figuren und auch einige Spiele. Aus diesem Grund können wir Ihnen den verlorenen Wuerfel nicht zusenden.

Daher hab ich angenfangen, selbst einen Lego-Würfel nachzubauen, war garnicht schwer. Man braucht:

• 1 vierer Block
• 8 vierer Platten

Einfach 2 Platten oben und unten auf den Block stecken. Dann mit geeignetem Leim (z.b. Uhu-Plastik-Leim, oder Sekundenkleber) die restlichen Platten auf allen 6 Seiten, des so entstandenen Würfels befestigen. Fertig.

Gesellschaftsspiele.de stellt  die neuen Lego-Spiele vor und veranstaltet dazu ein Gewinnspiel. Ich habe bisher Magikus, Lava Dragon und Minotaurus gekauft und fand sie alle 3 Spitze. Beim Gewinnspiel würde ich Creationary nehmen.

Ich bin fleissig dabei immer neue Sachen zu bedrucken. Zu sehen sind die Sachen auf der offiziellen Seite

print-on-things.com. Zur Zeit mache ich Demodrucke für die Konferenz (QCon) zu der ich Anfang März fahre. Die ersten Drucke auf Lego wurden auch schon verkauft. Hier nur ein paar kleine Appetithäppchen.

Inspiriert vom offiziellen Lego-Castle-Schachbrett, habe ich jetzt auch meines weiter gebaut. Leider gab es nicht genug schwarze Steine. Aber bisher sieht es schon sehr schick aus.

Heute hab ich das Lego Castle Troll Angriffsrad bekommen und gleich zusammengebaut. Ausserdem gabs noch ein paar Figuren aus einer ebay Auktion. Damit konnte ich den ersten Entwurf für das Schachspiel zusammenstellen. Es ist aber deutlich geworden, dass die normale Bauplatte viel zu klein ist.

Nachdem ich vor 3 Tagen eine Lego Zwergenmine (7036) von meinem Schatz bekommen habe, musste ich mir heute Nacht ein Geisterschiff + Hafen (limited, 7029) kaufen.

Beim Stöbern bin ich dann auf diese Seite gestossen, die ca. 83000 Lego Creations gesammelt hat. Wirklich beeindruckende Sachen.

I thought about extending Lego Time Tracking to a kind of Agile story and task management. There you take the time estimated for the task and put that many bricks of the color assigned to the task away to a central location where it is clearly visible (area of stacked bricks). Everyone contributing to the task takes away the bricks he needs for tracking his work time done on this task. The count of bricks still available at the information radar visualizes the remaining estimated time needed for the task. If the bricks are used up and the task not done its obvious that the team overpromised on this task (also noticeable much earlier).

This is something XylonSextuswrote in the comments to the lifehacker post. I just recently discovered the comment.

I quickly came to the conclusion that the existing eight colors available (plus the ones on sale at the online lego shop) are by far not enough to cover the tasks for a whole iteration. When pondering it I came across the printing possibilities my friend Mattcher has available at his company.

So we did a quick prototype on printing onto lego bricks and here are the results:

I’m currently thinking about further uses of this idea besides puzzles, learning materials, additional time tracking/project management colors…

Regarding the additional colors: As you can print a color on both sides you can reuse the bricks for different task (one of the two colors).
